THE FILMS OF ELLIOTT ERWITT
BEAUTY KNOWS NO PAIN
US 1972
In 1940, the Kilgore College Rangerettes became the first dancing drill team in the nation. They have been performing at half-time shows during college football games ever since. Erwitt's account of the selection and indoctrination of the Rangerettes traces the entire process as pretty young girls from all over the county try out at a special summer camp for a coveted spot in middle Americana. ( 26 mins.)
RED, WHITE AND BLUEGRASS
US 1973
Filmed in and around Union Grove, North Carolina, Erwitt captures local bluegrass musicians and artists as they play and reflect upon their heritage. A time capsule filmed in informal, natural settings, the performers include Lost John, The Brushy Mountain Boys, Sherrill Harris, Stanley Hicks, Buna Hicks, Joe Talbert, Smather's Old Time Band, The Gritz Band, Barry Myers and L.W. Lambert Jr., The Spring Valley Boys, and The Little Family. (26 mins.)
THE GLASSMAKERS OF HERAT
US 1979
In Herat, Afghanistan, Erwitt discovers two artisans making glass by the same method described in 7th-century Assyrian cuneiform tablets. A film about an ancient "lost" process and the way of life of its craftsmen and of their fellow villagers, Erwitt offers a portrait of a society on the cusp of change with the invasion of the Soviet Union.(30 mins.)

THE TASTE OF TEA opens Friday, April 6th at the Hollywood Theatre.
Life for the Haruno family is anything but conventional in their quiet mountain village. Eight-year-old Sachiko is followed by a giant version of herself that appears (seemingly only to her) at the most inconvenient times. Her awkward teenage brother, Hajime, sulks around the house nursing a broken heart because he let the love of his life leave town before telling her how he felt. Their father, a professional hypnotist, is none too happy that their stay at home mother is trying to restart her career as an animator. Their mother’s brother Ayano is on an extended visit, attempting to put to rest the romantic ghosts of his past. And then there is grandpa, perhaps the oddest of the bunch, who spends his time suggesting bizarre poses for the mother’s animated characters and singing backup in his other son Todoroki’s music video.
Written and directed by Katsuhito Ishii, who created the animation for KILL BILL VOL. 1 and directed the cult hit SHARK SKIN MAN AND PEACH HIP GIRL, TEA is a charming and surreal portrait of a family that tackles the universal themes of family, love and happiness with a uniquely Japanese pop-culture sensibility.
The Hollywood Theatre is located at 4122 NE Sandy Blvd. in Portland. General admission is $6, $4 for seniors 65+ and children 4-12. Monday night all shows are just $4.

Description:
IN SEARCH OF MOZART is the first major feature length documentary about the famed composer's life. Spanning 25,000 miles, 10 countries and over 80 compositions, it is the most comprehensive account ever produced about the musical genius.
The film traces the composer’s life primarily through his music and extensive correspondence. Throughout, it is the music that takes center stage, with the jigsaw of Mozart’s life fitting around it. Over 80 works are featured in chronological order, revealing striking parallels between the music and Mozart’s own life experiences. His letters reveal an extraordinary personal voice, which rings out on an engaging, human level, full of passion, pain, rage, bawdy humor and sensitivity.
Narrated by acclaimed actress Juliet Stevenson, the film is a work of demystification and accessibility, catering to curiosities of every caliber.

PUNK LOVE
DIRECTOR: NICK LYON
The streets of Portland are transformed into a modern noir metropolis where two kids struggle to find their way through the gauntlet of dire everyday existence. Fifteen-year-old Sarah (Emma Bing) clings to the glimmer of happiness provided by 21-year-old Spike (Chad Lindberg) whose rough and violent world is a preferred alternative to her abusive stepfather and her heroin addiction. Born in Pocatello, Idaho, Nick Lyon attended the Film Academy Baden-Wurtemburg in Ludwigsburg, Germany and then directed his first feature, I LOVE YOU, BABY starring Academy Award winner Maximilian Schell. Now living in Portland, PUNK LOVE is his second feature. (96 mins.)
Nick Lyon is a director, writer and a producer who was born in Idaho and, somehow, 20 cities and two countries later made it to the Hollywood district of Portland, Oregon. At the age of 21, Nick left Portland, Oregon and flew to Germany where he learned German and attended Film Academy Baden-Wurtemburg in Ludwigsburg. Here he earned a four-year diploma in film directing. One of the short films that Nick directed during his Film Academy stay was his award winning "Hilda Humphrey".
After graduating film school, Nick went on to direct Academy Award winner Maximilian Schell, in "I Love You, Baby", a neo-noir thriller produced by Warner Bros. Germany. Homesick for his rainy hometown of Portland, Nick left Germany and returned home, where he finished his second feature, "Punk Love".

starring Maximilian Schell, Jasmin Gerat, Mark Keller, Burkhard Driest.
