THE TASTE OF TEA opens Friday, April 6th at the Hollywood Theatre.
Life for the Haruno family is anything but conventional in their quiet mountain village. Eight-year-old Sachiko is followed by a giant version of herself that appears (seemingly only to her) at the most inconvenient times. Her awkward teenage brother, Hajime, sulks around the house nursing a broken heart because he let the love of his life leave town before telling her how he felt. Their father, a professional hypnotist, is none too happy that their stay at home mother is trying to restart her career as an animator. Their mother’s brother Ayano is on an extended visit, attempting to put to rest the romantic ghosts of his past. And then there is grandpa, perhaps the oddest of the bunch, who spends his time suggesting bizarre poses for the mother’s animated characters and singing backup in his other son Todoroki’s music video.
Written and directed by Katsuhito Ishii, who created the animation for KILL BILL VOL. 1 and directed the cult hit SHARK SKIN MAN AND PEACH HIP GIRL, TEA is a charming and surreal portrait of a family that tackles the universal themes of family, love and happiness with a uniquely Japanese pop-culture sensibility.
